A short drive up the mountain range over-looking Cairns City Centre, you will find a quaint but culturally rich village. Tucked in amongst world heritage listed rainforest, filled with local goods, Kuranda showcases the best the region has to offer! Hire a car and spend a day indulging in all the aussie delights, this tiny town has to offer. This day trip is a must-do for any North Queensland itinerary. Here are the best things to do in Kuranda, Queensland.
Kuranda - The Village In The Mountains
The absolute best thing to do in Kuranda - Take a ride on the Scenic Railway
Opening in 1891, this railway has been a major attraction of the area for over 120 years. Jump on board for a different perspective of the surrounding rainforests, waterfalls and rivers. A classic feeling of style and comfort comes along with the old carriages, some being 90 years old! Train tours run 4 times a day, for 2 hours each direction. This is also a great transport option if you do not have a car. Leaving Cairns City Centre in the morning and returning in the afternoon.
Head to the Kuranda Scenic Rail Website to check out time schedules, prices and any planned track work.
2. Cairns Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
This skyrail stretches above, through and under 7.5km of pure untouched rainforest. The views above the canopy were amazing! A whole new perspective on just how impressive our old rainforests of Australia are. There are 4 stops along the cableway, allowing you to walk along boardwalks and check out the waterfalls dotted in amongst the forest. The length of the cableway, the views and the quality of this attraction all made it incredibly impressive! It's an absolute must-do when visiting Kuranda!
3. Kuranda Original Rainforest Market
This market is the original market of Kuranda! You will find all sorts of Australian goodies in here! From souvenirs, Opal jewellery, native animal leather, snacks, honey and clothing. I enjoyed it more for its super spunky atmosphere! All the stall holders were happy and chilled out, happy to greet you in and have a chat. The maze of stalls, with wonky colourful signs on every turn, makes it feel like a fun little treasure hunt.
Be sure to check out the Petit Cafe for their amazing crepes! Best crepe I have ever eaten! It was a wonderful mid-adventure power pack with loads of fresh ingredients on top without all the heavy carbs you usually get with a burger and chips. Yummo!
4. Kuranda Heritage Markets
These markets have sprung up more recently, but maintain the same unique Australian cultural feel to them! You can find the world's hottest chillies here, original hand-painted didgeridoos, Crocodile, Emu and Kangaroo jerky, Mango Wine from the local Atherton Tablelands and the best fudge you will ever eat!
Hope at Kuranda Fudge Bar has brought a fun, whacky, naughty vibe to her store! Selling all sorts of Scottish treats, you'll also find a huge selection of delicious fudge! There were flavours there I never thought I needed in fudge!
Curtis' pick - The Ferrero Rocher fudge. My pick - The Bailey's alcoholic fudge.
